Heeeyyyyy y’all! So, I’ve had an amazing SONday! I’ve even had my ice cream (Halo Top, birthday cake) and I’m on my couch.
Okay…here’s my story…..
Soooo…I sing on the praise team and in the choir at my church (Christ Church Apostolic, Indianapolis, IN…..shameless plug) and today, our colors were navy blue and white. Well, guess who COMPLETELY forgot about our uniform….I’ll give you a moment to think on it……… If you guessed me, YOU ARE CORRECT! Tell ‘em what they’ve one Johnny…!!!
You’ve won ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!! But thanks for playing our game. Lol! (laugh)
Anyhoo…I didn’t even wear black and white today…NOPE! I wore brown and mustard! Yep…TOTALLY not what EVERYONE ELSE was wearing. So clearly, I’d forgotten…it was an honest mistake…but I’d noticed when it was too late for me to slip out and go home to fix it. Needless to say, I was feeling like I “stuck out like a sore thumb.” I felt TERRIBLE! I know…I know…I’m not the first, nor am I the last choir member to wear the wrong colors, but it didn’t help ease my nerves and I felt out of order. If you know me, you understand (somewhat, at least) how my brain works….uhhh, no guarantees on that but you’d at least understand how out of place I felt. LOL! I couldn’t help but think of 1 Corinthians 14:40, “Let all things be done decently and in order.” Now, I’m usually the one saying, “it’ll be alright, you’ll remember the colors next week.”, but this time, IT WAS ME! But again, it was an honest mistake.
I considered not singing at all, but they wouldn’t allow me to NOT sing. So, out of obedience, I got out of my seat and began walking toward the pulpit. “But Samuel replied, “What is more pleasing to the Lord: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams.” (1 Samuel 15:22 NLT) As I approached the mic, I heard God say, “Take your focus off of what you are wearing and what you could have worn, and put it on ME.” When I say, that made ALL the difference in the world, y’all…!!! I decided that it was the perfect time for me to get lost in the presence of God. Of course, not so lost that I was incapable of ushering in His presence during worship service, but lost to the point that colors were not even on the agenda. So lost that I was much more worried about what He wanted than the color mix up I was having.
You see, today, I learned a lesson…a very important one, I learned that we often get so caught up in the details that we miss the point. The point of service today was NOT so that everyone could see the uniformity of our church’s praise team or choir, but it was to worship God, to make sure He got ALL the glory, and to receive the word that He had for His people. Now, that doesn’t mean that we should be disobedient and wear whatever we want, whenever, with the excuse that we are to worship God. NO! It means that I almost missed God! I could have completely missed a move of God, a worship experience, by being focused on the navy blue dress that I left hanging in my closet. I also “learned” that when we place our focus where it should be, we accomplish a lot more. My assignment was to place my focus on God and His goodness and glory, and by doing so, I was able to worship Him freely. “Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:2)
Now, don’t just apply this to a Sunday morning. No…on those days when that button pops off of your shirt at work, don’t allow it to ruin the rest of your day. When that one coworker brushes past you or mumbles under their breath, don’t allow your focus to shift or allow them to cause your entire day to go south. Never allow things to cause your days or efforts to become pointless. It’s okay to allow small things to remain small things. As the saying goes, “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” Think about it during those days at work, at home, or even at the grocery store, when something seems to put a damper on your moment and realize that there are far more important things at hand. Don’t let your brown and mustard moments ruin your navy blue and white days. DON’T LET DETAILS RUIN YOUR DAY! 😉
Love y’all and good night (I’m tired!),
